Over 200 youths sign up to have their say in shaping local environmental policies (40KiB PDF)

Environmental Challenge Organisation (Singapore), the leading non-profit environmental body advocating sustainable lifestyle for youths, is organising the inaugural National Youth Environment Forum (NYEF) - "Global Citizens and the Environment: A Youth Perspective" on Saturday, 2 September 2006.

For the first time in Singapore history, the NYEF has created a platform for 15 local environmental groups and youth participants ranging from tertiary students and working professionals from both the private and government sectors.

Environmental Challenge Organisation (Singapore), a non-profit environmental body advocating sustainable lifestyle for youth, will be initiating the "ECO Youth Champions" initiative where they will make their first appearance at a major outdoor event in Singapore at one of the most celebrated events of the year, the National Day Parade 2006. At NDP06, the ECO Youth Champions will have the chance to share with approximately 60,000 spectators and 6,000 performers the importance of keeping our public spaces clean.

If you are still of the outmoded view that Singapore is a totalitarian state bereft of a civil society that is going strong, think again. If you are still obstinately stuck to the belief that our youths are necessarily sophomoric and parochial and can say nothing that can rouse distinguished government officials all over the world to a standing ovation, you must either be living in the wrong era, or you are not in the know of something that is changing at a breakneck rate.

In a bid to galvanise the youths in Singapore to rethink their preconceived notions about their relevance to the environment and to empower them with a voice, even in the international arena, the Environmental Challenge Organisation Singapore (ECO) decided to partner with Singapore International Youth Council (SIYC) to assemble and send in a delegate of five youth representatives to the 14th Session of the UN Committee on Sustainable Development (CSD-14). The ensemble is to present a paper tabling the result of weeks of garnering views of Singapore youths and youth groups on issues pertaining especially to Industrial Development and Energy for Sustainable Development, two of the themes of the Committee meeting.
