Environmental Challenge Organisation's ECO-House

On funds, structure and volunteers

By eco-house on Thursday, October 19, 2006 at 11:01 PM

This week, a few important things are coming in. Structural drawing of the ecohouse from Chia, Wilson updated us with some potential corporate sponsors, my algae tank is blooming nicely!

Thing is, Chia is leaving next Thur to Thailand for work till end November, so we gotta be familiar with her design and requirements of the superstructure! Raffles came back to Singapura and bombed the whole city after Farquhar built it not the way Raffles wanted. Gosh, that design looks like a lot of steel will be needed. In any case, we're trying to get it under 15k, no more, or budget will burst! Any builders wanna sponsor??

We made a rough count of the manpower required in the installation phase- about 15 peeps. Get all the required materials to the Diary farm road on 2 and 3 Dec, start camping at the campsite from 8 Dec onwards to work over the weekend! That'll be much fun, putting things together, sweating it out and looking at the end product. So, you don't have to go overseas to do community service, the same YEP style experience could be had right here!

I think I'd found quite the best way to keep CO2 in the tank to slowly dissolve into the water-wrappng the end of the delivery tube of a cloth. That's it. With a weight tied to it, the bloated cloth won't float up, so the CO2 can only dissolve into the soup. Seems now that the limiting factor to making my alge soup even thicker is the amt of carbon. I'd dumped quite alot of fertilisers in alr..

Vision and mulla!

By eco-house on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at 12:20 PM

Yep yep,
So it's another week at the ecohouse.

This week, more practical stuffs have been settled in our meetings. Amongst them, the Vision!

We need to start enlarging our numbers so that more could be involved and be environmentally concious, also we will need hands, hands! The vision will also be need for money.

Ppl say money paves the way, it's true in whatever situation. So we will pitch to the various foundations for funds. Lee, Lian, many others which Wilson and Yao will know, I'm a brick and mortar man, I only know how to get my hands dirty. ee.. Yar, so we did a rough budget, will need 20k. Main costs will go for the superstructure. WE'll use meatal beams, no choice, A house/lodge/hut whatever you wanna call it need to be stable and safe from collapse. The bus stop that I eyed in one of the factory at Sungei KAdut along the MRT line, specifically No64A, Sunget Kadut Street 1. The ppl there are not picking up their phones. Those few old bus stops are just sitting there wasting, just let me have em, will ya?..

Algae algae.. gay by the day... We will have to start growing them. This NIE is slow in getting back to us, We ordered a vial of B Braunii strain from this University in Japan, 2 days already also haven't get back to us.. what's wrong..? maybe the stars are not properly aligned yet.. we got to start growing them at homes alr anyhow..

I read up abit about the green roofs yday, seems like there are quite alot of considerations.. need a waterproff membrane which cost a bomb, and will still need replacing every 20 or so years.. need to select the type of plants to grow, otherwise the roots might be a problem. let the green roof ppl think abt it..

Also, the RLS -recycled living space- Yihan and Zengrong came up with a nice ppt to show us some example of thigns that can be made from recycled materials. I'll see if I can post it up later on. (I'm very bad with technologies u know..)

And! the arcihitect's visualisation of the ecohouse...!! Yes! We will have it this weekend.. You know, it's like drawing a million dollars on the wall if u wanna make a million.. that's wad the drawing will do!!

Ah, ok, readers, if you have recyling ideas, reusing ideas, reducing ideas!! Duun be selfish.. share with us, we wanna teach other ppl Your idea!

AND ALSO! we have technologies to showcase in the ecohouse, will need hands to put it up and together, interested? Let us know! can just email to berdtz@yahoo.com

Our next meeting is this Sunday, 230pm at the InQBuzz, red bus next to NYC. Come join our discussion, or hear from us soon...

By Wilson Ang a.k.a ShamU on Monday, October 02, 2006 at 11:06 PM

Thanks to our dear Wei Zhang who did up the minutes.

After meeting on 30th September, some ideas of the system were being discussed. We did some modification to the previously proposed building.

The building will be 12 m long and 3 m wide. The minimum height of the structure will be around 2.4 m.

Some key elements that will be feature in the eco- house:

• Green roofing
• Rainwater harvesting
• PV cell for solar power
• Algae cultivation for bio fuel
• Composter
• Recycling area
• A show area that will mimic a HDB kitchen

--------------------------------------

Proposed design of the house:

1. PV cells module
2. Green Roof
3. Rainwater filter
4. First sedimentation tank (make out of water dispenser bottle)
5. Water tank (water dispenser bottle)
6. Water wheel
7. Tank for algae growth
8. Overflow unit for algae tank
9. Fermenter using yeast
10. Composter

The following are the breakdown of the above stated-

300906 Meeting Minutes of Programs Team

By eco-house at 12:43 PM

Hi All,

Sorry for the late update of the Programs team. We had our first meting in the bus last Saturday and here's the update.

Firstly, we'll like to welcome these few newcomers on board the Eco-House Project. They are from Poly Forum 2006, and expressed interest in joining the group:

- Tom Seah, Temasek Poly, Programs Team
- Eve Goh, Nanyang Poly, Programs Team
- Chong Zheng Long, Nanyang Poly, Programs Team
- Siti Fatimah, Temasek Poly, Programs Team
- Daryl Law, Republic Poly, Building Team

They are just 5 of the 10 people (everyone in the photo above) who expressed their interest in joining the crew. The others were not able to attend the meeting last Saturday, however their commitment towards which team will be confirmed at a later date.

We started the meeting with a introduction of the Eco-House by Wilson and after which, we started brainstorming on what we wanted to see in the activites taking place in the house. We agreed that the activities should be:

- Interactive
- Educational
- Interesting
- Simplified so that they can understand how the technologies work
- To be able to bring it back home to try it themselves

Our main focus of these activities will be starting with the Secondary School Youths, and each technology will be introduced on a station-to-station basis. around 20 people will be inside the Eco-house going through the activities at one time. We will/may split the 20 participants into groups of 5, attached to a Eco-Guide to better facilitate the movement from station to station. Each trip will take around 1 hour.

We also brainstormed on the ways we can showcase our activities. Several ideas were being shared and discussed.

(1) Eco-Challenge

Every Station will be individualised, and when the Group reaches the Station, introduction of the technology at the station will be done by the Eco-Guide on what is it for, how the technology is feasible, and the procedure of the whole process. It will be followed on by a Q&A session to answer the students' doubts and unclears. Lastly, the students will be quizzed. Points will be given and the accumulated points will determine which group has won the Eco-Challange.

(2) Family of the Future

Earth in 30 years time will face the problem of resources deplete and human beings are suffering because of that. All the Stations will fasture a different family memeber of 'The Family of The Future' and through comic strips, they will tell the students on the environmental problems they are facing at that time, how the problem affected their daily lives and how the technology at each station was helping to make things better.

(3) Write a Story/Solve the Msytery Style

At the end of each Station, the group will receive their 'Clue' and they are suppose to used these clues ther are given to, in the Write a Story Style, come out with a story using those clues. The best stories coming out from those clues will be selected and published on our 'Wall of Stories'. In the Msyetry Style, clues will also be given for them to solve a mystery which will be given to them at the beginning. This idea is still very brief and will improve on this.

These are just the very prelimary ideas we came out with and we felt that we should do more research on the Biodisel, Composter, Green roof/walls, Rainwater Harvesting & Recycled Living Space before we can decide on the flow of the activities. Therefore, the 5 of us from the Programs Team 'attached' ourselves to one topic each to do our research.

Sharing of what we found out about the technologies will be done during our next meeting before we decide how we want the activites to run.

Details of following Programs meeting:

Date: 7th October 2006, Saturday

Time: 10am

Venue: In-Q Buzz

Peeps from other teams if interested, you can join us too and help contribute to more brainstorming!

Well thats all folks for this meeting,

Love,

Eugenie
Programs Team
