Initial rallying for EcoHouse
By MousePotato06 on Saturday, September 30, 2006 at 3:06 PM
Shared the idea of building an ECO house with some friends and colleagues. Most of them are supportive and promised to volunteer their expertise, network, time or resources if needed.Living the ECO way is very new to them (me too).
Volunteering --> widely thought of as helping the aged and the disadvantaged...
Food for thought: Some of them started to ponder over the possibility that we all are the "soon-to-be disadvantaged" ...
EcoHouse's vision should be to benefit the masses...
Anyone should be able to adopt this new way of living.
Need more thoughts to pen down the Vision...
Over the course of this week
By eco-house on Friday, September 29, 2006 at 11:17 PM
Every week is exciting in this project!Chia Chia revived the topic of using recycled material for the super structure. That's important for us, costs aside, the usage of recycled material is in line with what we want to spread, but coming up with a good piece of suitable junk is a hard one.. We'll see about it this saturday.
Eugenie got new volunteers, 12 to be exact! Everyone knows that there's no show without people.. Eventually, we hope everyone will know about the ecohouse and practis conservation and sustainable living!
Pauline, Ray and Wilson met up with Shooperman from Singapore Peak Oil Group (SPOG). Their website is http://singaporepeakoil.wordpress.com. My personal comment is big idea, but very hands-on approach, therefore have very similar objectives as us. Hope we will be able to work together for the ecohouse!
Listing what we have..
By eco-house at 10:24 PM
Hot Sunday afternoon, 24 Sept. well, it's better than raining.. It's tiem to get our hands on whatever was left over from the defunct NUS ecohouse. Our main interest was only the PV panel. The whole bunch of stuff was left for so long, we felt bad intruding on the termite colony infesting some of the stuffs. At the end of 2 hours and damaging Pauline's multimeter, we now know that the PV panels are working at better then optimum output! Producing some 20V through the ends of the panel!
The list of materials as follows:
Description Dimension Quantity
1. PV panel 2
2. Water pump 1
3. Bamboo partition 2.5 x 4 ft 5
4. `` `` 5 x 5 ft 1
5. Clear acrylic sheet 2.5 x 2.5 ft 1
6. `` `` `` 4 x 4 ft 3
7. Green roof base ~ 4 x 1.5 ft 15
8. `` `` ~ 7 x 1.5 ft 15
9. Wooden stakes 7 ft 20
10. Wheel barrow 2
11. Fish tank 1.5 x 5 ft 2
12. `` `` 3 x 3 ft 1
13. `` `` 0.5 x 5 ft 1
14. Nylon ropes Ø5mm ~ 500m
15. Flower stand 2
16. Plastic container Various siz ~ 20
17. Steel base support 15
Some photos.. but this blogger takes forever to upload photos.. maybe later..
Discussion that followed the sweating..
Our discussion finalized on the following things to go into the ecohouse:
- Biodiesel
- Composter
- Green roof/walls
- Rainwater harvesting & water desalination by distillation
- ‘Recycled’ living space, ie furnitures, accessories made of recycled materials
These people will be looking into the various components and getting their sub-teams:
Biodeisel - Ray and Albert
Composter - Chia chia
Green roof/walls & rainawter - Qingyao and Weizhang
‘Recycled’ living space - Zengrong and Yihan
For our next meeting, the sub-teams above will have to give a proposal of their domain which includes a first estimate of the material costing, the design, and how people can interact with it.
On the superstructure of the house, Ray will enquire from his Dad on standard non-walled frames. If others have lobang, pls go ahead to enquire and get quotations as well.
Pauline briefed us on the time-line she came up with. It details the broad outcomes that should be achieved by the week. Note that things will be added on and updated weekly as we go by, so it’s not exhaustive. Find attached.
Also, Pauline will prepare a document on the vision of our project. It will be handy in telling interested parties about us and very helpful in our subsequent Business Plan.
Prototype look at MOE Campsite
By Wilson Ang a.k.a ShamU on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at 2:45 AM

Here is the prototype that was initially came up with. Thanks Chia Chia and Qing yao.
After relooking at the existing materials and a few new ideas coming up, we will be having a few new ideas in this. But the rough idea is to keep it an open concept.
Meeting at MOE Campsite on 17th September
By Wilson Ang a.k.a ShamU at 1:54 AM
Well, the heat was gong on. We wanna get things going fast. Met up Kok Peng the next day. It was really fruitful and we had a good visit at his site. And also took a look at what we had to work with and discussed a few ideas with him. Those who were down: Pauline, Albert, Chia Chia, Yihan, Ray, Wei chang, Wilson
Here is the picture of the site we are using. And please bear in mind this is phase 1. Our prototype site.

Hm....all looks good. Kok Peng gave the green light. And we have the materials...but it seems like in pretty bad shape. We need to find another time down to assess the materials and know what we have to work with.

Conversation: ECO House..Moving on>ACTION!
Subject: ECO House..Moving on>ACTION!
Team,
Managed to catch up with Albert and Chia Chia and attached is something really rough we conceived where we need everyone’s input. We need to move on further into action to actualize this dream. The concept is using existing containers. Those shipping containers.
Plan is to divide them into 3 components:
Marketing/Overall concept Eco-businesss
Hardware-Construction Eco-developer
Software- Program Eco-programmer
Marketing/Overall concept:
Re look at WHY this is to be done. Shall drive the overview concept and direction to head towards. But to pen down the concept and constantly selling it to corporate partners. Looking for sponsors and hooking up with them to work out possible solutions. Will need to work with rest of the team to fine tune what is practical and not. To do the bulk of the paper work. To secure the place. To create a business plan with the support of the rest of the team. This is the main focus of the team. To create concept of how this whole project can self sustain, a business model for it. Constant communication with the team and also research on the feasibility in the corporate partner’s eye.
Eco-developer:
This team will be developer of the ecohouse. You will be the coordinator of the contractors, so called, in the structural construction phase. Once the building plan is drawn up, land secured, construction of the place should begin, ie laying foundation, pillars, supporting structures, etc (depending on the final design of the ecohouse). On top of coordinating, getting the 'hull' of the ecohouse lies with this team also. The last time, it was suggested using cargo container, but we hope more suggestions can come in. Albert- I personally feels that though tough, its appearance is bulky, not novel, don't give a 'green' feel. So I think we should work on more ideas. My personal guideline when I explore possibilities is that it's best if it had been a piece of junk.
The eco-developers will divide yourself into some sub-teams and hold portolios of research on, broadly defining, Water, Energy, Reusable junks, and even Sanitation to study the best (most implementable in urban context, cheapest) way to integrate into the ecohouse. We call each of these sub-teams Green Concepts
Once the structural construction is complete, all the fruits from Green Concepts will go up on the ecohouse. This phase will be done by ourselves as much as possible over a period of weekends, or at a go of two weeks- Youth Expedition Project style.
Software- Program:
This team is the most important. Recall that for the ecohouse to materialise, there must first be a convincing proposal telling people what good the ecohouse is. It doesn't make a difference to Wally sitting inside Long John Silver looking out to an ecohouse. There must be something there that attracts him to go explore. Exploring is not enough, how can we make some changes to his lifestyle. To create the interactivity with the public or targeted audience. Indeed, these are the essential questions to the very being of the ecohouse. This team also motivates the whole team because they will constantly dream up possibilities that makes our work more meaningful by the day! Their programmes will constantly push the Green Concept people to invent new methods for conservation. You will organise programmes as the ecohouse is being constructed to involve as many people as possible, giving all of them some sense of ownership-veru important!. The larger work will begin FOR the launch and after the launch. Everyone will be involved in planning for the launch, but activities to sustain activities in the ecohouse will be the main scope of the eco-programmers!
Next on:
Set date to meet up to firm concept of project.16th September 2PM at the bus. :P
During the meeting, we would be doing the following:
1. Brief on project initiation
2. Icebreaking
3. Group brainstorm for uses of ecohouse
4. Brainstorm of green technologies to integrate
5. Taking up roles
6. AOB
While mingling and getting to know each other more personally, we try to be more focused on task. We can aim to finish by 530pm.
Meanwhile, everyone should think about points 3, 4, 5, so that we do not start with a total blank on 16 Sept. Continue to experiment with green concept and ideas where we can see how we want to implement to this hub.
Think this as the end state:
A hub for all if not most environmental activities. Place where youth can chill out. As they come into this hub, they learn as they leave. They realize that it is all possible to take action now and still have fun. Imagine all the Environmental NGO comes to this place to chill out and taking it as a gathering hub. Foresee youth like yourself bring your friends to this place to chill and you can show them all the various possible way to take action. Infact, you don’t even need to tell them, they can see for themselves. A strong message by itself. A statement. An interactive media. And where possible, once done, people adopting this concept and popping it out all over the country or world. Something that can easily be duplicated to continue spread the words! :)
That’s all for now.
Cheerios!
Wil
P.S: Pls rsvp your attendance on 16 Sept
The NEW ECO House initial Concept...
By Wilson Ang a.k.a ShamU at 1:21 AM
Albert, Chia Chia and myself met up, we had a rough overview of things we want and chatted a little. Some pictures where sketched. We want it to be something of urban style where youth can blend in. A place the we youth can hub around. A gathering plae for youth. A lifestyle place. A greenie hub. A centre where all the Eco Happenings can take place.Imagine structured made of recycled materials. Product sold are organic. Free trade products. Cinematic experience in open air. PV cells to power up lights. Rainwater collected for non portablae usage. Algae plant. Green roofs. All these and more! An ECO house...an EcoPolis....an EcOasis..An EcoXperience for everyone who goes there.

The first of it's kind. An Urban Eco House. :)
Getting the people up and into shape....

Energizers,
Something I feel must be featured in the house.
Fuel prices are soaring. I was told by a lecturer when I took an environmental module sometime back, I don't know how true it is, that a third of consumer and commerce energy consumption in urban areas, ie cities, is used to cool buildings, that is air-conditioning.
How else can the building/room temperature be brought down? Currently, people are talking about green roofs but that applies to building. We will have that in sight, what other ways?
I'm sure this is a very relevant feature that visitors can learn and take home!

Team,
As Albert put it across, it is very heartening to see what is happening here. Let’s get the momentum going!
Albert is in charge of the operations end to get things started and building because he has been involved with YEP earlier and he’d be able to share his experience. It is almost like doing YEP project in Singapore. EXCEPT we need to do it nicer. It is not just for living, but also a show piece to people. To the youth. It must be looked at upon as something that is cool and unique that people would appreciate it and where possible, be able to provide information that “viewers” who come to this place can relate to themselves and make the change when they go back.
The target is this year December to have the prototype up and running. Time is short, but we can do it. :)
Do the research now and a meeting will be called upon. Perhaps a pre-action brief as well to set everyone in the operations end in tune. ;)
Let’s say somewhere mid September?

Dear All,
Wonderful to see many hands up for this project! Very up-to-the-challenge! I'm sure you'll gain alot as you give!
The plan for the coming weeks shall go as below if everything is smooth:
1. Consolidation of green ideas/ technologies to incorporate into the house
2. Sketch plan of house to be out
3. Areas of responsibilities identified
4. Meet up of team to update goals and workplan.
This is just a very skeletal description and no datelines have been identified for each. Reason being, when ideas and people are put together, alot of drags can be expected. But once the plan is set, the train should start to choo-choo with our joint effort.
Meanwhile, based on your own concept of an eco-house, do input suggestions of how/what green ideas/technologies could possibly be incorporated. Everyone have a share in the eco-house, so of cos your idea should be given a chance to be featured.
P.S Those who do not wish to receive anymore emails regarding this project, pls email me to remove from you from the mail-to list. Those who have not voiced your commitment, you are welcomed to join at any stage of the project!
Thanks.

Albert getting more volunteers on board
By Wilson Ang a.k.a ShamU at 12:44 AM
As you can see here...albert sent out an email to get volunteers who are interested to BUILD this house. These bunch were the same Mentor Youth that helped to guide the 375 youth during this year's NDP to encouage the public to clear up their own trash wearing "Did You pirck up your own trash?" Tee shirt. The email also explained how the project was initially concenptialized....

Subject: Re: eco house protoytpe
Hi all,
The story came about this way. About a year back, NYC was calling for youths to submit plans of how they would like to see the Youth Park, (*scape, for those who have heard of it). Wilson drew up a plan and submitted it. It was an environment-themed plan where there will be stores, NGOs' booths, 'green' houses, etc.
Among the main setup in the plan is indeed the 'green' house. Some might have heard of eco-villages elsewhere in the world; the main concept is that as much of the resources used are environmentally friendly and sustainable. for more information, see http://gen.ecovillage.org/ There are plenty other websites.
The plan was, however, not taken up by NYC, details of how their current development plans came about shall not be discussed, but we can say that they had their own plans.
If you have looked up the internet, you will see lots of example of eco-villages for rural/suburban settings. Wilson and us believe that such a concept can and should be hatched in an urban city as well.
Through Heartware Network (that Uncle who addressed us during NDP, Raymond, is the head), Wilson could use the Youth Park before the *scape development somewhere next June-July. It has been planned to have a carnival kind of thing where there are activities for everyone, at the same time become aware of sustainable living. A number of eco-house has been planned to be built for competitors to stay in for some competition, pitting against each other to come up with 'greener' solutions to green issues.
Before that event, a prototype of the eco-house have to be built. At present stage, the immediate aim is to have a successful, functional eco-house. One that can showcase urban eco-living (the technologies/ ways). This is in line with ECO's vision of getting the population out of their comfort zone, do those little things that all of us actually know for a better environment.
Ideals, some may say it's a waste of time, at some point requires action. Therefore I want to embrace this belief that we young people are dynamic. Muster the action. At the very least, one good shot at an eco-house. It's a house that we can built.

All,
Chia Chia's input on the house is most crucial, so her availability is primary.
The house must be functional as well as being a showpiece (aesthetic), including rainwater harvesting, solar panels, compost toilet, green roof, advertisement space etc. Wilson must be able to function in it comfortably on a daily basis. We must show that green living in an urban setting is a viable reality, given we're living in Singapore and the world is generally getting more urbanised.
The design must therefore be bullet-proof, not just a theoretical exercise. The concept paper must list benefits of the project to education and to the country as a whole. That done, we will get support, cos everyone from the govt to private sector companies will want to be associated with a winner, and we will be able to get:
(a) sponsors for equipment (rainwater harvesting, solar panels, compost toilet, green roof)
(b) a prime location (from authorities)
(c) vip/govt/celebrity support (for publicity/kick-off)
(d) advertising space (for sustainability and passive income)
And our objective of educating youths/children on green issues will be achieved.
This is a meaningful project.

Hi Chia chia,
A few good thigns have came out today. Wilson, Ryal, and I talked to each other on msn, and Ryal will be able to help out getting funds. An idea of using the eco house as wilson's office (a la ECO office in ECO house) smack in the middle of orchard road also arose.
However, whatever ideas we may have, we will need to work within technical restrictions. Those restrictions, you will be the only one who will be the most informed.
So, because we would like this project to proceed asap, I would like to ask if you will be free on any of the evenings this week. We will need to explore and agree on a use for the eco house, thereafter the design. I think there are a few important factors to consider for the use.
-Site, ie Maximum exposure to public
-Educational level
-Costs
The first 2 are inter-related. A good site will increase it's educational message. A house with a good educational message invariably have to be situated at a strategic site. Site is a consideration because 'who' are we building the house for.
I'm sure there are other factors that did not cross my mind at this moment, so please air them.
As I said, design. We should get it down on paper or, better still, CG asap as I believe it will help tremendously in selling our idea to corporate sponsors, govenment body for land space, volunteer's enthusiasm! Ah, design would incl the kinds of green/sustainable technology we would want to incorporate into the house, ie rainwater harvesting, solar panels, compost toilet, green roof, etc
So the 2 points above shall be the agenda of the discussion. We cannot hope to cover all areas, but a skeleton would drive the eco house on with much steam!
Also, Ryal and Wil, would you both like to join the discussion? I think Wilson cannot siam, big stakeholder. ; ) If coming, Ryal, any preferred day?
